In 1791, Pierre Charles L’Enfant was commissioned by the federal government to design a new capital city. L’Enfant felt that every part of his grand design was vital to the project. His clients however, felt that a smaller, simpler design would be better. L’Enfant failed to prove the value of his design to his clients and was dismissed in disgrace. If only his clients could have seen it, he could have sold it.
