Materials
In this stage, use the drawing tools to create custom shaped planter beds for your project. Planter beds always follow the slope of the terrain. This is the stage where you will also create walkways and driveways.
Selecting Multiple Surfaces with Quick Selection:
Quick Selection:
Quick Selection allows you to select all objects of a specific type at once. This allows you, for example, to change all your hardscapes to the same material with a single click. Simply click on the Quick Selection button and you will select all the objects of that type. For example, clicking on the House button will select all the shapes in the design drawn in the House Stage.
If any of the Quick Selection buttons are grayed out, it means that your project does not contain any objects of that type, or that you are in the 2D view.
Select All:
The Select All button will select all the surfaces and objects in your design to which materials may be applied.
Select None:
The Select None button will clear all your currently selected surfaces. This will also clear the red highlight allowing you to see your applied material.
Selecting Individual Surfaces:
Selecting Surfaces:
If you wish to change one individual surface, you may select it by double left clicking directly on it. Selected surfaces will highlight in red.
To select more than one surface at a time, hold down the CTRL button on your keyboard and left-click once on each additional surface. At any time, you can cancel your selection by pressing the Select None button.
Selection in 3D in Materials:
You will find that selection in 3D in the Materials Stage works differently than in other stages. Instead of selecting and moving objects with the 3D gizmo, you have the ability to select the surfaces of shapes and apply materials. This includes house pieces and custom shapes which you can select in other stages as well as water features, hardscapes, planter beds and all other drawn shapes which you normally cannot select in 3D. You will not be able to select most items inserted from the library unless they include drawn shapes.
Each different type of shape has a different number of surfaces. Shapes drawn in the House Stage for example have only one surface. Each house piece may only have one material applied to it. When you select the house piece the entire shape will highlight in red. If you have multiple house pieces in your design, you may apply a different material to each house piece, but only one material per piece. Hardscapes have multiple surfaces. The exterior, tile line, and coping edge of the hardscape may each have different materials applied. The red highlighting shows you exactly which surface is selected.
Selecting Painted Materials: You are also able to select materials which have been painted onto the terrain with the Paint tool in the Terrain Stage. Each material that has been painted onto the terrain with the Paint tool is its own surface and may be selected by double clicking on it. If you selected any one spot where the material has been painted, it will automatically select every spot where the material has been painted. If you change a painted material, every spot on the terrain where it has been painted with change.
Multiple materials can be painted on top of one another, layering multiple surfaces. This may make it difficult to select just one material. The Select by Material button located under the Currently Used Tab in the Materials Library can assist in selecting painted materials.
Changing painted materials here in the Materials Stage will change the corresponding Material Slot in the Terrain Stage.
Materials Library:
The Materials Stage has a unique library different from the other stages. The Materials Library does not contain the templates, items, and landscaping contained in the main library on other stages. Instead it contains materials you can apply to surfaces in your design.
The Materials Library has 5 Tabs at the top, Materials, Favorites, Currently Used, New Materials Added, and Search.

The Currently Used group contains all the materials that have been applied to the surfaces of shapes such as house pieces and hardscape shapes.
The Property Materials groups contains all the materials that have been applied to the terrain, especially materials that have been painted onto the terrain with the Paint Tool in the Terrain Stage.
Materials in both groups of the Currently Used list are listed alphabetically by material name. The location of the material in the Materials Library is displayed underneath the Tab row. The Tab, Category, Type, and Name of the material is listed.
As with other materials in the library, materials in the Currently Used list may be added to Favorites by selecting the material and clicking on the Favorites button.
Select by Material:
This button is only available on the Currently Used Tab. With a material selected in the list, this button will select all the surfaces that have the selected material applied. This makes it easy to quickly replace an applied material with a new one on multiple surfaces. This is especially helpful if you an object made out of shapes from different stages such as a house made of both house pieces and custom shapes. This button is also useful when changing Material Slots in the Terrain Stage.
Terrain Material Slots:
In the Terrain Stage, it is possible to use the Paint tool to paint materials onto the terrain. When using the Paint tool, you are able to select from 10 different Material Slots. You may change the materials in the Material Slots here on the Materials Stage.
Select the painted material by double clicking on it. All spots on the terrain where the material has been painted will be automatically selected. Replace the painted material with a new material from the library. The material in the design will change and the Material Slot back in the Terrain Stage will be updated with the new material. The Jump to Materials Stage button under Parameters in the Terrain stage makes it easy to jump from Terrain to Materials.
Painted materials will appear under the Currently Used tab in the Property Materials group. For more information on painted materials, the Paint tool, and Material Slots please see the Terrain Stage.
